  1. Trans fat is the worst fat you can eat; also known as trans-fatty-acids.
  2. Trans fat can increase bad cholesterol (LDL) and can lower your good cholesterol (HDL).
  3. Food high in trans fat include: baked goods, popcorn, tortilla chips, fried foods, cinnamon rolls, frozen pizza, coffee creamer, and stick margarine along with many other foods.
  4. When reading labels check for partially hydrogenated vegetable oil – this is a trans fat.

What is LDL, HDL, and triglycerides:

  1. Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol can build up in the arteries, making them hard and narrow which is not good for blood flow.
  2. High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol picks up excess cholesterol and takes it back to the liver preventing the build up in your arteries. The higher the HDL the lower your risk for heart disease.
  3. Triglycerides are the form in which fat exists in food and in the body.

 

How to lower cholesterol levels naturally:

  1. Use healthy cooking oils: and replace bad fats with healthier fats which are better for your heart.
  2. Replacing meat with fish two to four times a week will lower the saturated fats in your diet.
  3. Ban trans fats, exercise at least two and a half hours a week, eat fiber (oatmeal, apples, prunes, and beans).
  4. Fiber helps the body absorbs cholesterol. Make oil substitutions instead of butter and add fish to your diet.
  5. Use oils like Canola, Corn, Olive, Peanut, Safflower, Soy bean, Sunflower, Avocado, Grapeseed. Choose oils with less than four grams of saturated fat per tablespoon.
